''Cut Fruit' was made during 12 weeks as my first immersive project. A VR experience, you undergo a wacky non-linear journey which stands as a metaphor for my experience growing up in a half-asian household; particularly my relationship with my mother.
Everything, except some sound effects (mainly foley) was provided and created by me. I am really proud of this work to showcase an all-rounded effort in animation, editing and narrative storytelling.
You can view the video in proper 360 degree format on Youtube: here
Learning a whole new skill to produce a film in 12 weeks was a little daunting. So, I delved into experimentation.
This was my first test at drawing an environment in 360 degree format and uploading it to the headset. a bit wonky, but I figured out I needed to fix my ceilings.
This was my second attempt at drawing for VR, but my first attempt at animation in VR. I made the frames by drawing 360 degrees in procreate. I then exported them to Canva to create a mp4 file and watched it through the Oculus.
I then used this same process to create a storyboard which. Drawing in Procreate first, exporting to Canva, then downloading as a mp4 was the routine.
Filming was actually one of the hardest parts to figure out. I used an insta360 which was usually non-problematic, except for scenes where I had to balance it on top of my head. Don't worry, I eventually found a more stable way (on top of a beanie with lots and lotsss of ducttape).
The real learning curve was then animating over the top of my film. To do this, I animated in procreate, exported that to adobe animate to animate the frames ontop of a 360 screenshot, then exported that to premiere and keyed it all together. With the work of Soundsnap (a free sound library) and my hopes, I created my first VR project.
